Ask For Portfolio
As you do with photographers and videographers ask musicians and/or DJ's for examples of their work such as a CD or even a video of a past performance they might have.

Ask for References
It might also be a good idea to get references from the musician or DJ.  It's important to know that they will show up on time (and in some cases just show up), follow any guidelines you might set up and produce a great performance.

Set up Guidelines
While there might be some brides and grooms out there who don't care what the DJ plays during the reception, it may be wise to lay out what songs you'd like played, or more specifically what songs you do not want played.  This way your dream wedding will not be ruined when you hear one of you most hated songs playing in the background.  Be sure to set up reception songs you want played for:
-Couple's First Dance
-Father Daughter Dance
-Mother Son Dance
-Cake Cutting Song
-Garter Song
-Family Dance
-Wedding Party Dance
-Last Dance
-Any Other Dances

For the wedding ceremony you'll need music for the:
-Prelude
-Processional
-Unity Candle
-Recessional
-Any Other Music to be Played During the Ceremony
